But despite what the self-help brigade may tell you, and the mindfulness bores may say, following your breath, worshiping at the alter of yoga, or filling out a brightly coloured 'Wheel of Life' is NOT the way to crush it as a leader.

Rocky may have gotten away with a brain like putty. But in a high-stake business like ours, where sharpness of thinking, depth of thought, and mental gymnastics are critical for longterm success and personal survival, driving your number one tool-of-the-trade into the ground is not a great idea.
But because we haven’t been taught how to pressure-proof our brain, take conscious control of our subconscious triggers, and turn challenge, opportunity and the weight of uncertainty into flow-and-excel, not fight-or-flight, our battle-weary minds have defaulted to Def-con 1, and the nagging little voice in the back of our head asks us, "why you fucking bother...?"
For the past 18 months I’ve asked and interviewed hundreds of creative leaders across the world about their daily emotional states and the results are scary.
92% said they were stressed out and anxious. 68% said THEY WERE REGULARLY ANGRY and insecurE. 65% felt undervalued and disengaged. And 56% said they'd been burnt out– with 21% saying "Not yet!”
Those are worrying stats.
Not just because they make you feel shit, stuck in mental gridlock, and battered to an emotional pulp, but because they’re the result of a creative brain locked in fear-mode.
